STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES SOAR AT VAN NUYS AIRPORT’S AVIATION CAMP
(Van Nuys, California – May 1, 2017) Students from area high school and middle schools will get the chance to spend a week of their summer vacation visiting many locations around greater Los Angeles to explore the world of aviation. During the free, week long Aviation Careers Education (ACE) Academy hosted by Van Nuys Airport (VNY), students will receive a first-hand look at aviation- and aerospace-related career opportunities, as well network with professionals and gain insider tips on entering the industry.
Participants will be selected based on their desire to learn about aviation and will visit various facilities including Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Long Beach Airport (LGB), the Los Angeles Air Force Base Space and Missile Center and tours of iconic businesses in the industry. They will learn directly from experienced individuals in the field including pilots, veterans, mechanics, engineers and aviation professionals. The ACE Academy’s main objective is to educate students about the aviation and aerospace industries and to provide them the opportunity to explore the broad spectrum of career options that are not commonly known within these fields. VNY’s ACE Academy will run from July 10 – July 14 for middle school students and continue July 24 – 28, 2017 for high school students. Applications can be found under the Aviation Careers Ed section at http://www.lawa.org/welcomeVNY.aspx and must be returned to the VNY Public & Community Relations office by June 1, 2017.

VNY is one of two airports owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), a self-supporting branch of the City of Los Angeles, governed by a seven-member Board of Airport Commissioners who are appointed by the mayor and approved by the Los Angeles City Council.
Dedicated to noncommercial air travel, VNY had over 220,000 operations in 2016. More than 100 businesses are located on the 730-acre airport, including four major fixed-base operators.
Annually, the airport contributes approximately $2 billion to the Southern California economy and supports over 10,000 jobs. In addition, VNY provides programs to benefit local residents, along with educational initiatives and aviation-related career and training opportunities. LAX, the sixth-busiest airport in the world serving nearly 66 million guests in 2022, is owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), a proprietary, revenue-generating department of the City of Los Angeles that also governs Van Nuys Airport (VNY). As the international gateway to the Southern California region, LAX and its partners are dedicated to meeting global airport standards for customer satisfaction, safety, regional economic leadership, organizational performance and sustainability.
To better serve the millions of domestic and international guests that travel through LAX each year, the airport is undergoing a multi-billion-dollar capital improvement program to modernize its entire campus. Initiatives underway include an Automated People Mover, a Consolidated Rental Car Facility and two projects that will each add over one million square feet to the airport's existing property: Terminal 9 and Concourse 0.
