What is vanpooling?

A vanpool is a group of five to twelve people who commute together on a regular basis in a van. One person acts as the coordinator and is responsible for the maintenance of the van. All members of the van are encouraged to be a driver. Riders pay a subsidized monthly fare. LAWA provides all of our vanpools as an employee benefit.

What is the cost to join a vanpool?

LAWA employees pay a monthly, subsidized fare to ride in a vanpool. This fare is based upon the employee's round trip commute miles. Tenants may also join a vanpool but are not eligible for the subsidized rate. A daily roundtrip fare based upon the commute miles is also available.

How do I join a vanpool?

Contact Rideshare staff in person (Administration West, Room 105) or call us at 646-7665. Staff will match you up with the vanpools that are nearest to your home. You should then contact the vanpool coordinators to find out if there is a vacant seat and what are the pick-up and drop-off times/locations to see if one will be a good match for you. When you find a match, complete a Rider Agreement Form and submit it to the Rideshare Office for approval.

How do I become a vanpool driver?

Inform the vanpool coordinator of your interest to become a driver. Contact the Rideshare Office for a driving test, schedule a medical examination, and to have a DMV report generated for you. After a comprehensive review, Rideshare staff will determine your eligibility to drive. Only full-time City of Los Angeles employees are eligible to become drivers.

How do I join or form a carpool?

Contact Rideshare staff in person (Administration West, Room 105) or call us at 646-7665. Staff will match you up with the carpools or employees interested in forming a carpool that are nearest to your home. You should then contact the carpool coordinators or employees to find out if there is a vacant seat and what are the pick-up and drop-off times/locations to see if one will be a good match for you. When you find a match, notify the Rideshare Office and we'll guide you from there!
