LAWA INCREASES SHUTTLE FLEET TO LAX-IT, VEHICLES IN CENTRAL TERMINAL AREA DECREASE BY 15% AND TRAVEL TIMES IMPROVE

(Los Angeles, CA) As Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) continues to improve the LAX-it experience half-way through its first week of operations, airport officials today announced an increase in the shuttle fleet to ensure swift transportation for guests to LAX-it, where they now connect with their taxi and ride app drivers. This announcement comes as travel times to LAX and through the Central Terminal Area have seen dramatic decreases since LAX-it’s launch just four days ago.

Average shuttle wait time at terminals yesterday was two minutes, and average time to the LAX-it lot on a the shuttle was 11 minutes. Many guests also chose to make the short walk to LAX-it, which is adjacent to Terminal 1. Recognizing the problems with shuttles the first few days, LAX has been adding shuttles into the LAX-it routes, increasing the shuttle fleet to a total of 35 today, up from 29 on Tuesday when the lot began operations. With these additional shuttles, wait times are expected to decrease ever further. LAWA is continuing to refine the LAX-it shuttle system, including dynamically re-routing shuttles to account for volumes at different terminals at different times of days, planning accordingly on an ongoing basis. These shuttle increases are in addition to dynamic staffing and ongoing improvements to signage and traffic routing.

LAX-it has already resulted in a dramatic decrease in traffic in the Central Terminal Area (CTA). Removing 14,795 cars on average daily, or a 15.3% reduction overall, has increased vehicle speed on the upper level on average by 34% per day and on the lower level by 6% per day. This is a critical step in the right direction as LAX-it is part of a strategic plan to mitigate traffic in the CTA and in surrounding communities while the airport undergoes unprecedented construction that will cause a 30% reduction in curbside space in the CTA to build the Automated People Mover train that is the airport’s solution to traffic moving forward.

As the weekend approaches, due to higher volumes of travelers, LAWA officials encourage guests to expect higher wait times once in the LAX-it lot to connect with drivers. LAWA continues to do everything possible in LAX-it’s first week of operations and is working with the service providers to ensure the guest experience is as smooth as possible.
