Terminal 1, Level 3, pre-security

Los Angeles is an expansive, complex and grand city, with diverse neighborhoods and seemingly endless landscapes. The bright, atmospheric tone of Los Angeles is shaped by the abundant transformative light that is cast throughout the city. This optimistic energy is a symbol for what drives the dreamers and doers of Los Angeles. In this light-filled lobby, viewers may observe how the mood of this site-specific mural changes throughout the day, creating a space to contemplate rigidity versus fluidity. Upon further reflection, one may consider what is seen and not seen, shifting one’s perception to discover a doorway based upon a keyhole perspective of seeing only a portion of something, yet knowing more is beyond.

Tofer Chin’s work encompasses paintings, sculpture, large-scale public murals, and installations that challenge perspective through conventional concepts of form, color and scale. His practice encourages viewers to further their understanding of their physical surroundings by reflecting on one’s internal architecture of thoughts and emotions. Chin has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally, including in Australia, Germany, Spain, Brazil, China, and United Arab Emirates. He has produced public art commissions nationally and overseas in Brazil, Nicaragua, and Japan. Chin, a recipient of the California Community Foundation 2019 Fellowship for Visual Artists, received his BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.
