LOS ANGELES WORLD AIRPORTS
2021 YEAR IN REVIEW

A MESSAGE FROM JUSTIN ERBACCI
CEO, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA)

As we begin 2022, I wish all of our guests, employees and airport partners a very happy and healthy new year. Together, we accomplished so much during the past year, and there is a lot more to look forward to as we continue the modernization of our airports and strive to provide gold-standard service to our guests.

We achieved many milestones at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY) in 2021 and have much to be proud of as Team LAWA. We celebrated the opening of multiple, stunning new facilities, including the West Gates at Tom Bradley International Terminal, LAX Economy Parking, the Airport Police Facility, an extension of Terminal 1 and the connection between Terminals 1 & 2. We launched new smart parking technology that allows our guests to reserve parking online for the first time, and added valet service. We helped our guests return to the skies safely, with clean and healthy facilities, on-site rapid COVID-19 testing and offered vaccines and boosters at LAX for our employees and guests.

Thank you to Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Board of Airport Commissioners for your vision and leadership that helped shape 2021 and made the year a great success.

There is even more to be excited about in 2022, starting with welcoming Super Bowl LVI in February, and many other anticipated milestones and achievements.

Later this year, construction of the 2.25-mile elevated Automated People Mover guideway will be complete, and we expect delivery this year of most of the 44 train cars that will serve our guests when the system is completed in 2023. The last structural concrete for what will become the largest rental car facility in the world also will be poured. The new headhouse for Terminals 2 and 3, which provides a centralized hub for ticketing, passenger screening and baggage claim, will open in the spring. And, all LAX parking structures will offer electric vehicle charging and the latest smart parking technology.

Our commitment to our guests in 2022 and beyond is that we will continue to deliver on our promises for a modernized, reimagined airport experience that is healthy, safe, efficient and exceptional. We will do so sustainably and with gold-standard service.

I would like to extend a special thank you to all of our employees and partners who have been critical to our success as they continue to work on-site throughout the pandemic.

I hope that you enjoy reading more about our accomplishments in 2021 below. Thank you for your partnership and support.

A Year of Recovery for Aviation

After experiencing the greatest downturn in traffic in aviation history in 2020, passenger traffic at LAX continued to recover throughout the year. LAX had a total of just over 48 million passengers in 2021, an increase of 66% compared to 29 million passengers in 2020. That also represents more than half of the record-setting 88.1 million passengers in 2019.

Cargo: LAWA had an incredible year for cargo operations in 2021, setting new records as our role in the global supply chain gained new importance. LAX cargo totaled 2,974,073 tons last year. Through November, LAX's trade with the world rose 17.6% from the same time a year ago, to a total of $126 billion. Because of this, LAX ranked number 9 for total trade among the nation's roughly 450 airports, seaports and border crossings through November of 2021.

LAWA Celebrates Grand Openings of Modernized Airport Facilities
Six ribbon-cutting events in 2021 marked the progress LAWA has made on its $14.5-billion modernization program that will touch all nine terminals at LAX, improve roads and launch the Automated People Mover in 2023.
West Gates at Tom Bradley International Terminal Enhances Aircraft Operations

In May, Mayor Eric Garcetti and LAX celebrated the opening of the new West Gates at Tom Bradley International Terminal, a $1.73-billion facility that delivers a modern guest experience with cutting-edge technology, a first-in-the-nation checked-bag storage system, biometric boarding gates and more cutting-edge amenities for guests. The five-level, 15-gate, 750,000-square-foot facility, which serves both international and domestic flights, was completed over the course of 4½ years. A second-ribbon cutting was held in October to mark completion of a new baggage handling system to provide additional capacity for both the West Gates and Tom Bradley International Terminal, enabling 24-hour early bag storage among other features. Terminals 1 and 2 Now Connected Via New Extension

Work to connect all of LAX's terminals took a big leap forward in 2021, with the opening of the $477.5 million Terminal 1 Extension in June.
