(Los Angeles, CA) Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and the Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) today announced the completion of sound insulation improvements at Woodworth-Monroe TK-8 Academy. The completed work is part of a $44 million soundproofing program launched in 2015 to improve four schools located within the flight paths of aircraft flying to and from Los Angeles International Airport.

Woodworth-Monroe TK-8 Academy is a new school comprised of the former sites of Woodworth Elementary School and Monroe Middle School. The remaining schools to be completed under the LAWA noise program are Oak Elementary and Morningside High schools, which are scheduled for completion next year. Under LAWA's program, improvements at Beulah Payne P-8 STEAM Academy were completed in 2018.

"Working with schools to soundproof classrooms is an important element of LAWA's environmental work, and we are proud to help build modern learning environments that are quieter and more sustainable than ever before," said Samantha Bricker, Chief Sustainability and Revenue Management Officer, LAWA. "Along with Inglewood Unified School District, we are looking forward to the completion of sound insulation work at Oak Street Elementary and Morningside High schools next year as we continue this important program."

Each site's project includes replacing heating, ventilation and air condition systems, installing exterior windows, replacing exterior doors, upgrading ceilings with sound-reducing insulation as well as related electrical upgrades. The work is expected to achieve interior noise levels at or below 45 decibels – about the volume of a quiet conversation – increase natural light in classrooms and cut energy costs.

"As the proud county administrator of the Inglewood Unified School District, I am dedicated to providing exceptional educational opportunities for our amazing students. Providing these opportunities requires safe, modern spaces for teaching and learning," said Dr. Erika Torres, County Administrator, Inglewood Unified School District. "Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) sound mitigation funding is integral to providing equitable facilities for our IUSD students and staff."

IUSD is currently providing grab and go school lunches for students from Woodworth-Monroe's newly-renovated cafeteria, and the rest of the school campus is ready to welcome students when they return to in-person instruction in the classrooms.

IUSD's soundproofing installations are funded through LAWA via the Federal Aviation Administration. To date, LAWA has dispersed $35.3 million of allocated funds for work at Woodworth-Monroe TK-8 Academy, Beulah Payne P-8 STEAM Academy, Oak Elementary and Morningside High School.
