(Van Nuys, California – June 20, 2012)  On Monday, the Board of Airport Commissioners shared their support of the agreement reached between Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and the Van Nuys Airport Association to rehabilitate runway 16R.  The project will be completed in four phases and calls for ten days of complete runway closures, 26 nighttime runway closures and 65 days of shortened runway lengths.

“This project is a testament to what can be accomplished when teams collaborate for a common goal,” said Commissioner Joseph A. Aredas, who represents the Valley area.  “I am pleased the groups were able to come together to reach an agreement that meets everyone’s needs,” said Commission President Michael A. Lawson.  Curt Castagna, President of the Van Nuys Airport Association added, “This is a major milestone.  Over the past few months, we have worked with LAWA’s project team to determine a rational and prudent alternative that meets airport safety and eliminates runway closures to the fullest extent possible.”

Construction is scheduled to being in the first quarter of 2013.  The Federal Aviation Administration will fund 95% of the project.
