VAN NUYS AIRPORT LAUNCHES ANNUAL WEEKLONG AVIATION PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

(Van Nuys, CA)- Fifteen San Fernando Valley high school students from 12 local high schools will participate in a free weeklong motivational program designed to provide a basic understanding of aviation careers and airport operations. Known as the ACE (Aviation Career Education) Academy and modeled after a similar program at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the program is kicking off Aug. 9 - 13 and will be offered every summer at Van Nuys Airport (VNY).

Participants will get a behind-the-scenes look at airport facilities, functions and activities and meet employees from a wide variety of trades and professions. Activities will include tours of Van Nuys Airport's air traffic control tower, aircraft mechanics school, city helicopter center and aviation companies specializing in medical emergency and corporate flight operations. Field trips to LAX are also featured.

"We're very excited to offer this free program to local high school students," said Van Nuys Airport Manager Selena Birk. "Our goal is to increase student awareness of the many aviation career opportunities available and encourage them to start thinking about their future." Applicants are selected based on merit and must submit essays describing their interest in the program, along with recommendation letters from teachers. This year's participants include students from Van Nuys, Birmingham, Monroe, Taft, Grant and Granada Hills High Schools, among others.

On Aug. 13 at 4 p.m., students and their families will take part in a graduation ceremony at the airport's Airtel Plaza Hotel. Los Angeles City Councilmember Tony Cárdenas will provide the keynote address and distribute certificates to all students in the first graduating class. "This is a unique educational opportunity that truly benefits our Valley high school students," said Councilmember Cárdenas. "Programs like the ACE Academy help teach young people about the determination and initiative it takes to achieve their personal and professional goals."
