FLYAWAY BUS TERMINAL PROJECT MOVES FORWARD

(Los Angeles, California – March 7, 2000) Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners has awarded a contract to Daniel, Mann, Johnson and Mendenhall, Los Angeles, to provide design and construction administration support services to improve the Van Nuys FlyAway Bus Terminal at Van Nuys Airport. The FlyAway provides convenient, 24-hour, daily, inexpensive park-and-ride bus service between Van Nuys and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The project, which was officially launched last October, will develop a new terminal to accommodate additional FlyAway buses and other transportation services. Planned enhancements include improving vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow around the terminal, additional passenger amenities such as ATM machine and improved food/beverage service, larger passenger waiting/seating area, and adding 500 more spaces to the existing parking lot.

Commission President John J. Agoglia, said, "Expansion of the VNY FlyAway facility is an important first step toward Los Angeles World Airports’ development of a proposed network of intermodal facilities spread geographically across Los Angeles County to facilitate ground access to and from LAX." Agoglia reported that current sites under study include downtown Los Angeles, the South Bay, and western San Fernando Valley.

Agoglia added that a specific study on the feasibility of implementing a program that allows passengers to check their baggage at the FlyAway facility, rather than at LAX airline ticket counters also is underway. He said that implementing a proposed off-airport baggage check-in at a FlyAway facility would be unique to the U.S. airport industry.

Lydia H. Kennard, LAWA interim executive director, said, "The FlyAway is an important and convenient resource for San Fernando Valley travelers getting to and from LAX. Improvements to this service will increase its capacity, usefulness and potential to the region."

Kennard added, "This project demonstrates LAWA’s commitment to providing solutions to address traffic congestion in and around our airports. This is just one of many projects showing we intend to do our part to help mitigate traffic wherever we can."

The Van Nuys FlyAway bus terminal is located at 7610 Woodley Avenue at Saticoy Street. Roundtrip fares are $6 for adults (ages 13 and up) and $3.50 for children (ages two through 12). Children under age two are free. For more information about FlyAway operations, call (818) 994-5554.
