About
The Airport Police Facility consolidates Los Angeles Airport Police Division (APD) operations that were previously conducted from eight different locations, and was designed to accommodate the operations of critical police functions with infrastructure that supports next-generation law enforcement technologies and best practices. As Los Angeles World Airports' hub of public safety and security, the facility houses the largest police agency in the United States dedicated exclusively to 24-hour airport activity.
The 160,000-square-foot facility was certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold in 2023 and was built to CalGreen Tier 1 standards with a focus on state-of-the-art construction and sustainability. Features include dual-piping for future recycled water use and installation of a maximum allowance-sized solar/photo-voltaic system on the headquarters building. It also includes a new 12-foot-wide landscaped paseo along the south perimeter at Westchester Parkway.
To further improve the communication and coordination of essential public safety services provided by APD, the facility includes spaces for the division’s Office of Operations, Office of Support Services, Office of Homeland Security and Intelligence, Emergency Service Unit, Traffic and Security Group, Bomb Disposal Unit, and K-9 Unit. It also features a contained practice shooting range, a multi-purpose community room, and a new 960-stall parking structure with built-in mitigations to minimize environmental impact.
Consolidation of APD's previously discrete police facilities was a recommendation in the 2011 Report of the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Airport Security. Its location, adjacent to Loyola Boulevard and Westchester Parkway and just north of the LAX airfield, was selected with the input of the community, stakeholders, and Los Angeles City Council District 11.
The facility was completed and opened in 2021. It is one of the largest police facilities in the state, housing more than 1,100 sworn officers, security and staff.
