Preparing the Next Generation of Aviation/Aerospace Professionals

“The ACE Academy allowed me to explore the many different careers available in the aviation industry. It’s a wonderful program and I recommend it to any middle school or high school students who are interested in finding out what the aviation industry has to offer” said former ACE Academy student Alban Martinez.

Almost every young child goes through a phase where he or she wants to fly an airplane or build a rocket ship – yet most never realize what it takes to achieve these dreams, and that it can be done, with the right guidance. The future of our local aviation community depends on connecting with youngsters who already have a passion for flight -- showing them how exciting and rewarding a career in the field can be, and giving them practical guidance about opportunities and career paths. That’s what the Aviation Careers Education (ACE) Academy is all about.

This summer, Van Nuys Airport (VNY) hosted two sessions of the ACE Academy, a free, week-long program developed to get students interested in careers in aviation. The middle school program ran from July 14 – 18, and the session for high school students ran from July 28 – August 1.

The program provided opportunities to aviation professionals in action. For many of the students who’ve been dreaming of flying since they were kids, it was a dream come true, as participants visited more than 15 different locations, including JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) in Pasadena, Jet Blue of Long Beach, Los Angeles International Airport, the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica, the Ronald Reagan Library, and of course the Van Nuys Airport.

Students got the chance to talk to real professionals, so they could find out details about what their jobs are really like as well as what path they pursued to land a job in aviation/aerospace.

If you know a local student with aviation aspirations, it’s never too early to get them thinking about next year’s ACE Academy. Each session admits 25 students, and priority is given to students in the neighboring areas of VNY, as well as those students with a true desire to learn about the aviation industry.

The dates for the 2015 ACE Academy have been announced!

Middle School ACE Academy: July 13-17, 2015

High School ACE Academy: July 27-31, 2015
