  • Home to nearly 700 aircraft on 730 acres of land

Runway Improvement Project
Building a New Level of World-Class

In November 2012, work commenced on an approximately nine-month project to rehabilitate and modernize VNY’s 8,000-foot main runway (16R/34L) to meet current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) design standards. This marks the largest maintenance project conducted at VNY in over 50 years and is scheduled for completion in August 2013.

This investment in the airport’s infrastructure will ensure that aircraft—from single-engine planes to multi-engine business jets—continue to move quickly, safely and efficiently. It will also promote economic growth and maintain VNY’s role as a powerful engine in the Southern California economy.

Van Nuys Airport offers:

  • Two parallel north-south runways, 8,000 feet and 4,000 feet
  • FAA-staffed air traffic control tower (6 a.m. to 10:45 p.m.)
  • ILS,VOR,VOR/DME, LDA and GPS approaches
  • 24-hour police and airfield operations support
  • Pilot-controlled lighting
  • Perimeter security fence

About Runway 16R

Description

The Van Nuys Airport (VNY) Runway Improvement Project is a plan to rehabilitate and modernize the airport’s 8,000-foot main runway (16R/34L) to meet current Federal Aviation Administration design standards. The project will ensure a minimum 20-year runway lifespan and provide many airfield improvements.

Work is scheduled to commence in November 2012 and be completed by the end of August 2013. Rehabilitation will not impact operations on VNY’s 4,000-foot parallel runway (16L/34R).

A combination of asphalt overlay and partial reconstruction will be phased over three sections of the main runway (north, south and center). The plan includes:

  • Mill and overlay 4,400 feet of the runway’s center section
  • Enhancements to the run-up area and installation of a new blast fence
  • Repairs on existing concrete runway ends
  • Reconstruction of runway and shoulder pavements
  • High-speed exit light modifications
  • New pavement markings

Through a collaborative effort among airport management and tenants, this project has been designed to minimize operational impacts and maximize airfield improvements to the fullest extent possible. It will play a vital role in enabling VNY—L.A.’s business airport—to serve the needs of the global aviation community, today and tomorrow.
