The Van Nuys Airport Runway Improvement Project is a positive example of how major maintenance projects can be conducted with the least impact on airport tenants. Work has been carefully phased to minimize the number of days the main runway (16R/34L) will be shortened or closed during construction. Rehabilitation will not affect VNY’s 4,000-foot parallel runway.
Operational impacts will include:
- Full runway closure for 10 days (24-hour) and 26 nights (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.)
- Shortened runway lengths for 65 days, with no less than 5,000 feet available for arrivals and 5,209 feet available for departures at all times
According to the project schedule, the 10-day, 24-hour closure period is targeted to begin in mid-July. A total of 26 night closures, occurring from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., are scheduled to take place during various project phases. This includes a series of 16 night closures prior to and after the full closure dates; four night closures when the runway threshold is displaced to the south and then again to the north; and two night closures in late August for final runway striping.
In addition, the runway is scheduled to be shortened for 65 days starting in late April 2013, and during May and June 2013.
