LA/Palmdale Regional Airport (PMD) traces its beginning to the late 1960s when it entered into agreements with the City of Palmdale and the U.S. Air Force to acquire property for an eventual major airport site and to provide for interim facilities in partnership with U.S. Air Force Plant 42.
Land purchases were first made in September 1970 from more than 2,700 property owners. Acquisition continued from 1972 to 1983 during which time more than 99 percent of the total acreage was acquired. In 1995, LAWA finalized acquisition of the last 22 parcels of land. Today, LAWA owns approximately 17,750 acres of land adjacent to U.S. Air Force Plant 42.
PMDs existing passenger terminal opened on June 29, 1971 on leased property adjacent to the 17,750 acres. Air service operated intermittently through the years.
In November 2006, LAWA, the City of Palmdale and the Wheels Up Palmdale Coalition made a concerted effort to attract an airline to provide daily regional jet departures to a large hub airport in the Western United States -- service that would provide travelers with a wide range of connecting flights to major business and leisure destinations throughout the United States and the world. After receiving a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation under its Small Communities Air Service Program and a competitive selection process, United Airlines began regional jet service to San Francisco International Airport on June 7, 2007.
LAWA also is development a new of a new master plan for PMD that will guide airport land use and development decisions through 2030.
As the population in Southern California grows and capacity at existing airports in the L.A. Basin become restricted, PMD has gained renewed attention as a facility within the Los Angeles air service region that could serve as a reliever to Los Angeles International Airport. LAWA is working with the city of Palmdale, the Antelope Valley business community, and the U.S. Air Force to further develop PMD's potential.
LA/Palmdale Regional Airport is located in one of the fastest growing regions in California. Working in partnership with the cities of Los Angeles and Palmdale, LAWA is actively marketing the airport to commercial air carriers, commuter airlines, and aircraft maintenance and repair facilities.
