(Los Angeles, California – September 20, 2013)  L os Angeles World Airports’ (LAWA) employee volunteer program, known as Team LAWA, is joining other community members in the annual Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 21, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Dockweiler Beach near Tower 55.  With beach attire, sunblock, and working gloves in tow, Team LAWA employees are prepared and ready for their workout collecting trash and debris in an effort to keep our ocean and local waterways clean.

LAWA is a proprietary department of the City of Los Angeles that owns and operates Los Angeles International, LA/Ontario International, and Van Nuys airports.  As part of LAWA’s commitment to service, employees volunteer on weekends throughout the year under the Team LAWA name.  Through volunteering, employees share the experience of community and service through camaraderie, teamwork, and friendship.  LAX Community Relations Director Maria Tesoro said, “Not only is LAX traveler-friendly, but we are also community service friendly.”

In addition to Coastal Cleanup Day, Team LAWA also volunteers in the annual Los Angeles Marathon Expo, Westchester’s “Jet to Jetty” Run, LAX Coastal Dunes Maintenance Project and, of course, the most popular event for employees is decorating the City of Los Angeles’ Rose Parade entry.  Last year, Team LAWA employees were among the groups of  volunteers connected to the Space Shuttle Endeavour’s street voyage home to Exposition Park.

Under the leadership of Heal the Bay, the organization that coordinates Coastal Cleanup Day in Los Angeles County, has made it easy and convenient for volunteers to register via their website at .  Coastal Cleanup Day began in 1985 as a way to combat the increasing marine debris along our shorelines.  The California Coastal Commission and the Ocean Conservancy also lead the cleanup efforts.
