Collider Beaming

Collider Beaming by Timothy Nolan is a vinyl mural of collaged imagery featuring a neutrino detector, a large, sophisticated physics apparatus that detects tiny, subatomic particles, and intermingled maze patterns. Nolan’s work reflects his long-standing interests in abstract painting and Pop Art, combined with his curiosity in quantum mechanics and astrophysics. This particular work serves to celebrate some local history and the region's spirit of innovation and imagination. 

Frederick Reines, a University of California, Irvine (UCI) founding faculty member, won the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics for being the first to discover neutrinos. And more recently, a team led by physicists at UCI achieved the first-ever detection of neutrino particles produced by the Large Hadron Collider at the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) facility near Geneva, Switzerland. Nolan’s interest in particle physics is strictly limited to a layman's sense of wonder and awe. Collider Beaming is meant to convey his admiration of these scientific discoveries to travelers as they arrive and depart from Los Angeles, a metropolis that may sprawl in maze-like patterns, but is also home to breakthrough creative thinking, that in this case fostered a whole new field of research in humankind’s quest for discovery beyond the visible realm. 

Timothy Nolan’s artistic practice includes handmade collages where he combines photography of unique geological terrain, scientific graphics, and various found patterns to create work that alludes to natural phenomena and the intersection of culture and nature. Nolan has exhibited extensively, with shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Europe. Museum shows include the Portland Museum of Art; the San Diego Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tucson, Arizona; and the University Art Museum at California State Long Beach.
