Ontario Tunes Up
Trumpeter Gary M. Daniels was proud to begin his employment with Los Angeles World Airports in 1998, and within two years promoted to his current position of Senior Custodial Services Attendant. While Daniels takes pride in his work at Ontario International Airport, his real passion is for music. Earlier this year Daniels found a way to marry his full-time LAWA position with his passion, and produced three wonderful promotional songs about the Ontario International Airport, which display his musical talent.
Among the songs is "Romance in Ontario," which tells the story of a man and woman engaged in a long-distance relationship. However, thanks to the numerous flights that operate from ONT each day, the two will be together within hours. Another song has a country-western flavor--much like the LAX song-and another features rap and R&B vibes. The diverse styles clearly showcase Daniels' incredible musical depth.
Inspired by LAWA Executive Director Lydia Kennard when she featured the 32-year-old award winning LAX song during recent employee information sessions, and encouraged by his supervisors Bob Haines and Ralph Morones, Daniels got busy fashioning songs for ONT. He first spent time developing the lyrics, then laid the musical tracks. He also sings all parts on the finger-popping tunes that honor ONT and the many entertainment venues-casinos, hot springs, golf--in the surrounding area, and invites others to "fly Ontario-o-o-o-o."
Daniels' musical training began in elementary school, when he was introduced to the trumpet. By junior high school he was a member of an award-winning R&B band, and later was awarded a scholarship to Los Angeles-area Dick Grove's conservatory of music.
"Music is a way of life for me, and my heart's desire," says Daniels. His love and talent for music have allowed him to travel extensively in the states, to Canada and Japan. He currently performs with notable groups such as Rose Royce and is arranging materials for his church while "striving for spiritual perfection, " he said. Daniels is married and has six children.
